The food scene in the Hershey/Harrisburg, PA area is ah-mazing. I live so close to here, and this foodie and wine tour was a good lesson in taking the time to discovering the things that are in your own backyard.
Tröegs Independent Brewing is in Hershey, PA, and this is both a craft brewery and a restaurant. It combines the best of the things I love: awesome beverages, a unique menu that’s delicious, and a casual atmosphere that’s perfect for anything from a family dinner to a night out with your friends.
Tröegs Independent Brewing, Hershey PA
There are lots of long, community tables inside for a pull-up-a-chair-and-join-us vibe. You’ll definitely be comfortable in jeans and while there’s plenty ‘o beer on tap, this restaurant is definitely family-friendly.
I didn’t ask to see a kids’ menu, so I can’t say for sure if they even have one, but there’s grilled cheese on the regular menu so that base is covered.
Your server will take your drink order, and then you can stroll on up to the Snack Bar to place your food order. You’ll get a buzzer to call you when your order is ready to pick up and take back to your table.
Tröegs Beer
We can’t talk about Tröegs without talking about the beer. It’s made right on-site, and as you might see if you do the tour, there’s a science behind all of their brews. Literally, beakers and test tubes and pipettes. They take their beer seriously.
And you can taste it. I am admittedly more of a wine drinker, but I do like the beer that I like. And I don’t drink it enough to really even know what that is. I’m one of these people that asks my husband, “What kind of beer do I like? What did we drink in college?”
But I explained what I liked and what I didn’t like to the server, and he nailed a flight for me. These were soooo good. Sunshine Pils was one of my favorites. Go check out the selection. I love the labels and creative names.
Tröegs Unique Menu
While the dining room is pretty casual, the food is pretty upscale. Not in a stuffy, pricey, what-even-is-this kind of way. But it’s unique, and I can see by looking at the online menu that they’ve added a few things since we were there in November.
In the right forefront of this picture is the Spicy Tempura Cauliflower. It was to-die-for! My girlfriends and I ordered a variety of shareables to pass around, and if you’re into that style of eating, I’d recommend it. There are so many things we wanted to try on the menu that this allowed us to taste a bunch.
Another favorite item on the menu are the mussels. These are so flavorful and easy to pass around. Plus they go well with beer, so that’s a win!
Brewery Tour at Tröegs
After we ate, we strolled around the restaurant. There’s actually a lot to see, including a great gift shop (brought some beer home for my husband), a tasting room, and an independent brewery tour.
This runs through the center of the brewery and signage is provided to show you the fermentation process, the quality lab (this is where the pipettes are!), and the packaging line. It’s quick and interesting, so definitely hit that while you’re there. You can schedule a guided tour as well if you want a deeper dive.
Art of Tröegs
The Art of Tröegs is SO COOL. The gallery is upstairs (just ask and you’ll be directed). What is it? Art of Tröegs is actually an art contest where local makers can submit unique works of art that either contain Tröegs packaging or are inspired by Tröegs in some way.
They keep a variety of the entries, including some past winners, on display in the gallery. This stuff is insane. People are so creative – it blows my mind! There are clothing items, like jean jackets and the sneakers pictured above, woodwork, traditional paintings, sculptures, you name it. Don’t miss this when you visit for a few ‘WOW’ moments.
