Disney has provided me with an expense paid trip to Los Angeles for the #MoanaEvent and #TheBFGBluRay in exchange for my coverage of the events of the trip. No other compensation is given. The opinions and experiences in my posts are 100% mine. You can read my full disclosure policy here.
This past summer my kids and I read Roald Dahl’s The BFG together and just loved it. It’s such a fun story, and my son’s 2nd grade class is actually reading it together now, too, so we’re still talking about this Big Friendly Giant on a daily basis. Then we went to see the movie, Disney’s The BFG, on the big screen and fell in love all over again. Disney did such an amazing job of bringing this story to life. We adore it, and today, November 29, The BFG on Blu-Ray is available to own!
“The BFG” unites the talents of three of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg – to bring to life the classic tale of a courageous little girl named Sophie (newcomer Ruby Barnhill) and a gentle and charming Big Friendly Giant (Oscar®-winner Mark Rylance) who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. Spielberg employs a new, hybrid style of filmmaking blending live-action and performance-capture techniques, resulting in genuine, heartfelt performances and super-photorealistic animation.
Families and fans will be swept away by this spectacular adventure and delight in extensive bonus features, including a behind-the-scenes look at the making of “The BFG” hosted by Ruby Barnhill and featuring Steven Spielberg; a charming, all-new short; a fun and whimsical tutorial on the Big Friendly Giant’s unique language of Gobblefunk; a touching tribute to screenwriter Melissa Mathison (“E.T. the Extraterrestrial,” “The Black Stallion”); and more.
Spielberg’s directorial debut with The Walt Disney Studios was a labor of love, as he’s been a fan of Dahl’s for years. In fact, he read “The BFG” to his own children when they were younger. According to Spielberg, “It’s a story about friendship; it’s a story about loyalty and protecting your friends; and it’s a story that shows that even a little girl can help a big giant solve his biggest problems.” “The BFG” is a Golden Phizzwizard* come true for Spielberg, Dahl fans and audiences around the world.

The BFG On Blu-Ray Bonus Features
One of the best things about the Blu-Ray is all of the bonus features. I love these behind-the-scenes look at how the movies are made. This release has some great additional content including all of these:
Bringing The BFG To Life
This is so cute! Ruby Barnhill is the lovely young lady who plays Sophie in the film, and in this feature she shares her own journey through making the movie. This little girl is so dear and her relationship with Steven Spielberg is heartwarming.
The Big Friendly Giant And Me
In the movie, Sophie spends a little time hiding in a room that was clearly occupied by another little boy at some point. We never find out too much about him, but this clip tells some of the story. In the bonus feature we learn more about the friendship between The BFG and the little ‘bean’ who lived in Giant Country before Sophie.
Gobblefunk: The Wonderful Words of The BFG
What’s your favorite word from The BFG? Whizzpoppers, no question, in my family. This Giant language made reading the book so much fun and it makes the movie hilarious, too! This feature is a “whoopsey-splunkers tutorial on the BFG’s gloriumptious Gobblefunk.”
Giants 101
The giants in the movie are HUGE, but they’re obviously played by real life size actors. So how do they get their movements so accurately at that scale? They actually used motion capture to record the movements of the actors, and then blow it up into a giant-sized story. In this feature the actors talk about how they dove into their role of being the big guys on the screen.
There’s also a tribute to Melissa Mathison who worked with Steven Spielberg on ET and also wrote the screenplay for this movie.
