Maybe you’ve heard about Read Across America through your child’s school. My daughter’s school invites the parents in for breakfast with the children, Muffins with Moms and Donuts with Dads. You get to enjoy a treat with your kids and read to them and shop at the book fair. This is next week for us and we’re all looking forward to it. If you haven’t heard of Read Across America, you can read on for more info and learn how to get involved.
What Is Read Across America?
Read Across America is the signature project of the National Education Association that encourages kids and teens to read. Every year near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, is Read Across America Day. There are lots of opportunities to get involved. I’ll share a few here!
Dr. Seuss Storytime at Target on Saturday February 25 from 9-11am
All Target stores are participating in a reading of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. I love this book! It was my pick when I got to read to my daughter’s preschool class a couple years ago. Target is going to have free goodie bags and more fun stuff, too. Read more about it here!
Test Drive a Mazda, Make a $25 Donation to School Libraries
Now here’s a fun way to contribute. Print out this form, then head to your local Mazda dealership. Test drive a car (c’mon, pick something sporty that goes fast!) and they’ll validate your form and contribute $25 to public school libraries. Read more about this cool program here!
Pledge to Join In!
Head over here to make your pledge, your commitment to joining in for the cause of Read Across America. Be creative. There are tons of ways to contribute to this cause. Donate books to your school, read to your kids, let your kids read to you, hit the bookstore, grow a yard full of truffula trees! Sign up to join in here!
Share your Read Across America Events
Check out the Read Across America Facebook page or their Cause page where you can share your photos, videos, thoughts, and happenings. Connect with the community of readers participating in this event!
Want more? Look here!
There are a bunch of resources on this page. You’ll find links to share with the teachers in your school, ideas for Read Across America events, even links to find discounted Dr. Seuss books.
Reading to my kids is one of my favorite things to do. It’s one of their favorite things, too. Don’t miss this chance to join in with thousands of other bookworms and growing readers to enjoy sharing a story with your kids. I think I’ll break out our copy of The Lorax and share it with mine this weekend.
Happy reading!
