You started off the school year so strong with the healthy breakfasts, didn’t you, moms? And now every morning it’s a table scene of cereal bowls and bananas with peanut butter. Every. Morning.
After watching this go down in the kitchen every day before school for the past few weeks, I figured it was time to make a little effort to wake up our weekday breakfasts.
3 Ways to Wake Up Your Weekday Breakfasts
By ‘little effort’ I do mean very little effort. I’m not what you’d call a morning person, particularly since I don’t start downing coffee until the kids have left for school. So these 3 tips are so easy and have, believe it or not, gotten the kids excited to get out of bed in the morning. It’s a Christmas miracle!
Adventures in Fruit
I’ve mentioned the bananas and the peanut butter. It’s really more peanut butter than banana. I’m not sure what my daughter is doing there but one really easy way to spruce up breakfast is with a variety of fruit.
It’s healthy, colorful, fresh. The kids will dive right in. And here’s my real tip with fruit: mix it up! Try something new once in a while.
Don’t go with the same bananas and grapes every week on your grocery trip. This past week we bought a star fruit and they loved it. My store has a whole section of rare produce, so just pick something up and if you don’t know how to cut or serve it, that’s what YouTube is for.
Sandwich Bros. Bring the Protein
Protein is a must for a healthy breakfast that keeps the kids going all day long. I recently shared with you my go-to snacky dinners on a Friday night feature Sandwich Bros. Angus Cheeseburgers and Chicken Melts. They make breakfast sandwiches too and they are literally ready in about a minute!
My favorite Sandwich Bros. breakfast sandwich is the Egg White and Turkey Sausage. It packs in 11g of protein and the all natural turkey sausage is so flavorful. You can find these in your frozen food aisle, and they are individually packaged and microwave in 75-85 seconds. So while you’re cutting up fruit for the kids, this is cooking and breakfast is on the table in 3 minutes flat!
The thing I love about these sandwiches is not only how easy they are to serve, but also how high quality they are. This isn’t the drive-through breakfast sandwich. They’re only 150 calories, contain all-natural turkey sausage, and they taste great. I particularly like them with that side of fruit. A perfect balance of something sweet and something savory.
Sip It Down
My last tip for waking up your weekday breakfasts is to drink them! Who doesn’t love a smoothie? I whipped up this Pineapple Smoothie and it’s SO easy to make.
I don’t even have a blender that works right now, so before I made this I’m Googling, ‘can you make a smoothie in a food processor?’ I know, I’m a smoothie novice over here. Well, turns out a food processor is awesome for this job, and since I used frozen pineapple, the only thing I had to cut was the lime in order to juice it.
If you’re super pressed for time, get a bottle of lime juice at the store and skip the zest. The rest of this is literally throwing a few ingredients into your blender (ahem, food processor) and mixing. So easy!
Add the pineapple, coconut milk, lime juice, all but a small bit of the zest (save some for garnish), and honey to your blender or food processor. Mix until smooth. Serve with remaining lime zest sprinkled on top and a lime wedge for garnish. This recipe will fill two beverage glasses, so I listed it as 2 servings. However, those are pretty big drinks. You could easily split this up into 4 servings, especially for kids.

These were delicious. I poured them into two big glasses for the kids, but it’s actually a LOT of smoothie in there. I’d suggest splitting this into 4 servings.
I saved some in the freezer to drink later, too! The kids think they’re having ice cream for breakfast. It does taste a bit like soft serve, but it’s totally healthy so I’m happy to let the think whateeeeever they want.
