If you know me or have followed my blog for any amount of time, you know I’m a reusable bag nut. My daughter started kindergarten last fall and quickly gave school lunch two thumbs down. So I found myself packing her lunch five days a week. It didn’t take me long to realize that I was going to start spending an exorbitant amount of money on plastic baggies and creating ridiculous amounts of trash. And I only have one kid in school. How many baggies get thrown out each day for her whole class? The whole school? Whoa.
I already had a few reusable bags, but needed to bulk up my supply since becoming Head Lunch Packer, so I went on a quest to find some super cool baggies for my main girl. On my search I found Snack Taxi, an awesome American company that makes the coolest reusable, eco-friendly products.
I love the fabric of their snack and sandwich sacks. Such colorful, unique patterns. I love this ‘from the garden‘ sandwich sack and this ‘dino dudes‘ snack sack. They’ve even got some cool, modern fabrics for the holidays.
SnackTaxi bags are lined with nylon. Love this since it means you can put wet foods like grapes or cheese cubes in them. I wouldn’t put anything too sloppy since they seal with velcro, but fruit is perfect and the outside of the 100% cotton exterior will stay totally dry.
All materials are lead, phthalate and BPA free. Perfect, because I certainly don’t want to feed my kids these chemicals. You wouldn’t believe the nasties that are in our dinnerware and plastics.
SnackTaxi makes super cute kid-friendly cloth napkins. Yup, we use these, too. I pack one of my cloth napkins with my daughter’s lunch every day. The alternative is buying and throwing away paper towels or napkins, which means spending extra money on something that will end up in the trash. No thanks! I love this cute napkin that we got to review. It’s absorbent for messy faces and fingers, has a cool print on each side, and it’s very soft and small enough for a lunch bag.
Machine wash or hand wash, whatever you prefer! My cloth napkins get washed with my towels, and the SnackTaxi reusable bags sometimes find themselves in the washing machine, too. While they are machine washable, I don’t recommend it. Hand washing takes all of 30 seconds and will keep your bags from fading, pilling, or falling apart at the seems. I haven’t had this happen to my SnackTaxi bags, perhaps because I haven’t machine washed them, but I’ve had it happen to other reusable bags and have just learned that my bags last longer when I hand wash.
SnackTaxi products are very affordable. The sandwich sacks are $8.95, the snack sacks are $7.95, and the cloth napkins are only $5.95. Pretty inexpensive for something so cute that you’ll get tons of use out of and will save you money in the long run when you stop buying plastic baggies. Plus it’s the right thing to do for Mother Earth. I’m not an extreme tree hugger, but I do believe that everyone can do a little something. Bagging the plastic bag habit is easy to do when there are cute bags like the ones from SnackTaxi.
SnackTaxi is generously offering one of my readers a set of bags: one sandwich sack and one snack sack! This giveaway starts on May 8 and runs through May 16, 2012. It is open to U.S. residents only. You can enter to win here. Good luck!
