Newman’s Own Organics Review: “Great Tasting Products That Happen To Be Organic”

March 26, 2012

newmans own organics

I’m sure most of you have heard of Newman’s Own brand, and maybe you’ve heard of Newman’s Own Organic.  I’ve been using Newman’s Own salad dressing in my pasta salad recipe for years, so when I got the opportunity to review Newman’s Own Organics’ products, I thought I’d be whipping up batches of pasta salad left and right.  Wrong.  Newman’s Own Organic started as a division of Newman’s Own is 1993 and in 2001 they became their very own company, making their very own delicious foods.  Their motto: “Great tasting products that happen to be organic.”  Great tasting is right.  My family had the opportunity to test out a whole bunch of Newman’s Own Organics products and we loved every. single. item.

Without trying to make you drool all over your keyboard, let me tell you about some of the goodies we had the chance to try.  We got a bag of these Double Chocolate Chip cookies and they were sooo good.  One day while my Mom was visiting I gave a few to her and she said, “You can tell them in your review that when you eat one of those cookies you feel like you’ve had a piece of chocolate.”  Done, Mom!  What she meant was that there are nice sized hunks of chocolate in these cookies.  No skimping on the good stuff here.

Speaking of cookies, we also got to try these Hermits.  I should be honest and say *I* got to try the Hermits.  And once I tried them I hid them from the rest of the family.  These were my favorite treat in the box.  Hermits come in three flavors: Original,  Cinnamon, and Ginger.  We got the try to Cinnamon and they were delicious.  Made with organic molasses and organic raisins, they are chewy and sweet and just the perfect cookie.  Mmmm…loved them.

fig newmansWe also tried the Low Fat and Fat Free Fig Newmans which were also great. These cookies are certified organic, made with organic figs and they are soft and sweet. We all loved these and they were my one of my husband’s top picks.

Dark Chocolate 02

My daughter has a big time sweet tooth (gets that from her momma!) and her favorite products were the chocolate goodies.  I felt like I could taste the difference in this chocolate versus the chocolate bars I usually eat.  There’s something divine about organic dark chocolate. Newman’s Own Organics also makes chocolate cups in peanut butter, mint and caramel.  We got to taste the caramel and those were my daughter’s favorite treats in the whole box.

newman-os

We were also able to taste a bunch of the delicious Newman-O’s.  Wow, love all the varieties here!  My favorite pick was the Ginger-O’s.  These are such a unique cookie with a just the perfect amount of ginger flavor.  The Chocolate, Peanut Butter, and Original O’s were awesome, too.  Running a close second to that Ginger-O’s for me was the Hint-O-Mint.  Dunk a few of them in a glass of milk and WOW.  So yummy.

fruitRaisins

Newman’s Own Organics also makes dried fruit.  These are 100% organic and a perfect snack for the kids.  For me, too!  I loved the raisins.

mints_new

These organic mints were also a big hit around here.  My daughter loved the Hot Cinnamon mints and once again Ginger was my favorite.

licorice

My 3 year-old son was obsessed with the licorice. I had to hide it from him.  It is so yummy and fun to eat.  And of course it’s made with organic ingredients. We got to try the black, strawberry, and pomegranate flavors.  The tangerine looks delish, too!

pretzels

My daughter got to take some of these Newman’s Own Organics pretzels to school with her for snacks once in a while. They make 10 different varieties to choose from and they’re all certified organic and baked, not fried, so they’re a great low-fat snack.  Ours were gone in a jif.

popcorn

Last but not least we got to try the popcorn.  This is also something I send to school with my daughter for a snack once in a while.  It’s a favorite late-night snack for us, too.  One thing I love about this product: no trans fats or partially hydrogenated oils. It’s made only with organic corn and palm oil.  So a healthy snack becomes even healthier.  Perfect!

A review that involved the whole family isn’t complete without including the pets.  And lucky for our three furry little moochers, Newman’s Organic also makes pet food!  Our two cats got to sample both wet and dry cat food and their favorite was the Beef and Liver wet food.  They finished that can in a flash!

My dog Sam wasn’t left high and dry by any means either.  Check out all the dog goodies this lucky pooch got to sample!  I’ll be honest, there’s not much  my dog won’t eat.  But he sure did enjoy this dog food and the treats were a huge hit.  My kids love feeling treats to Sam and I certainly feel better about it when I know he’s not getting a bunch of junk food.  You want to know how much Sam enjoyed his treats?  Dog humiliation, coming right up…

Mmmm...I love this Chicken and Rice Snack Stick!

Little peanut butter hearts! My favorite!

Those were the best treats I ever had, Mom. I'm in heaven!

Clearly we were fortunate to taste test a LOT of amazing products.  And like the Newman’s Own Organic slogan states, they really are great tasting products.  What sets them apart from the other stuff on the grocery store shelves is not just their taste, though they seriously are a cut above the rest.  These products are made with wholesome, natural, organic ingredients.  No unnecessary preservatives, no nasty chemicals, no stuff that we all know is just not good for you.  Their products are certified organic by Oregon Tilth, which means that ingredients have been grown on farms that have not used artificial fertilizers or pesticides for three years or more. And these claims are certified by an independent third party, not just thrown on the label by Newman’s Own Organic.  What you get is truly an organic product.

So what didn’t I like about these products?  I found out halfway through a bag of Ginger-O’s that organic doesn’t mean calorie free.  Oh, bummer.  😉  Honestly, there wasn’t a thing I didn’t like about them.  Each product we tasted was delicious.  We didn’t find one that we didn’t like.  Many of the goodies we got were sweet treats, so you just use your common sense serving them up as you would any treat.  If you and your kids are going to eat cookies, it’s certainly better to eat delicious organic cookies than something with who-knows-what thrown in the mix.

Be sure to join the Newman’s Own Organic community on Facebook, and look here for a retailer near you that carries their products.  You won’t be sorry you tried them!

Now for the fun part!  Newman’s Own Organic is letting me give one lucky reader 4 of their delicious products!  I got to pick my four favorites so each member of my family contributed to our prize picks: I chose the Hermits cookies, my husband picked the Ginger-O’s, my daughter chose the milk chocolate caramel cups, and my son picked the strawberry licorice.  I hope the winner has a sweet tooth! And please note that if the winner has any food allergies, we’ll work to find you alternative products that meet your dietary needs.

This giveaway will run from Monday March 26 to Thursday April 5 and is open to U.S. residents only.  You can enter to win right here!  Good luck!

I was provided with samples of Newman’s Own Organics products to facilitate this review.  The opinions in this post are 100% mine.  You can read my full disclosure policy here.
