Naturepedic Organic Kids’ Mattresses: Sleep Safe, Sound, & Chemical-Free

April 29, 2014

I was provided with a complimentary Naturepedic mattress to facilitate this review.  The opinions in this post are 100% mine.  You can read my full disclosure policy here.

Did you ever stop to think about how much time kids sleep?  When they’re really little they actually sleep half of their lives away! Even at age 5 my son, Leo, sleeps about 11 hours a day, maybe a little more. That’s about half of his young life spent with his face on a mattress.  When you think about that and realize that many mattress contain harmful chemicals (things like vinyl/PVC, polyurethane foam, and formaldehyde….yuk!) it sort of gives you pause.  Naturepedic makes comfortable, organic kids’ mattresses that let you rest easy knowing your kids are resting safely.

Organic Kids' Mattresses

There’s my little snoozer, Leo on his new Naturepedic bed.  We didn’t always have an organic mattress for him. Let’s be honest here, they are a significant expense and not really an exciting toy to spend money on. But Leo has had wheezing and asthma-like issues for a couple of years now and when we had the opportunity to swap his mattress (which used to be mine growing up – it’s a little old!) for an organic mattress I was really thrilled to provide him with a safer place to sleep.   And I’m sort of kicking myself for not investing in his health sooner.  This mattress will last him probably the entire time he’s growing up in our home so I don’t have to worry about replacement costs, and what could be more important that your child’s health? Nothing.

Naturepedic Shipping

If you’re wondering how a Naturepedic mattresses arrives on your doorstep, ta-da! I was super impressed with the packaging.  The mattress is wrapped in plastic, then boxed, and the box is wrapped in a heavier plastic. So it’s totally clean, dry, and protected when it gets to you.  I could immediately tell the difference between this mattress and our non-organic mattress.

SSA and USA

First, I love that it’s made in the USA! Then you can see this mattress has the Specialty Sleep Association Level IV Seal of Approval. That looks good to me but I had to do a little Googling to see what it really means.  I was right, it’s good: “The mattress must achieve stringent benchmarks including 95% certified organic and bio-based materials in fabric, quilt and core (unless steel is used) and achieve third-party certification of the finished mattress in addition to testing for volatile organic compounds.”

Quilted Organic Cotton Mattress

My son is 5 and fully potty trained, but you never know…  I’m more worried about him waking up sick in the night and having that kind of wet mess ruin the mattress than I am him wetting the bed. Naturepedic offers three different organic kids’ mattresses and to be safe we went with the 2-in-1 Ultra which has both a quilted side and a waterproof side. When Leo gets a little older we’ll flip his mattress to this quilted side. It feels just as comfy and soft as it looks.

Organic Waterproof Mattress

Right now we have him sleeping on this waterproof side.  Some waterproof mattresses and pads are really scratchy and rough. Not the case with this one. You can’t hear it crinkle or anything under the sheets and it’s not sticky and rubbery. This side has an easy-to-clean 100% polyethylene waterproof surface (so pure it meets food contact standards) and it also functions as a dust mite/bed bug barrier – no need for a an extra mattress pad!

Organic Kids mattresses

This Naturepedic mattress is so comfortable. Leo has been sleeping on it for a couple of months now and my Mom visited from out-of-state and slept with him on it too. She also thought it was a great mattress. Supportive and firm without being hard, which is just how I like it!

Check out the Naturepedic website to learn more about the health benefits of their organic mattresses for the whole family.  They have kids’ mattress in both twin and full sizes, crib mattresses, and queen and king sizes for adults, too! Then follow them on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to speed with their latest products and promotions.

Naturepedic is very generously offering one of my readers their own organic mattress for kids!  This giveaway will end on May 9, 2014. You can enter to win [HERE].
