I’ve had the opportunity to share reviews with you on a Little Pim Spanish Language Set and then another Little Pim Spanish Language DVD and flash cards and both have been big hits in my house! My kids have loved learning new words and I’ve enjoyed it too.  All those years of Spanish in high school weren’t a total loss after all!  I’ve retained a lot and the Little Pim products have refreshed my memory.  It’s been amazing to see how quickly kids can pick up a new language.

Little Pim Japanese Language DVD

Little Pim has a lot of language learning products for kids in many different languages.  My son’s preschool teacher, who also used to be my daughter’s preschool teacher, is a family friend and for the past few years she’s hosted Japanese exchange students.  We’ve gotten the chance to meet these sweet girls and when I asked my kids if they’d be interested in trying a Little Pim DVD in a language other than Spanish they both wanted to try Japanese.  Yikes.  This is unfamiliar territory for me.  I don’t know a word of Japanese, so I wasn’t sure how I’d be able to help them learn and practice new words.

Little Pim Japanese DVD

I have to tell you, I was so pleasantly surprised at how easy Little Pim makes it to help your child learn a new language, even if the language is also new to you.  Now, I know I’ve said this is one of the strengths of their products in past reviews, but I do know a decent amount of Spanish so I wasn’t really unbiased in my opinion. This time, with a Japanese language DVD, I went in knowing just as little as my kids but I was still able to guide them through the DVD.

One of the first words introduced is the word for ‘circle’ and in Japanese the word is ‘maru.’  The video shows circles in all colors.  This is a yellow circle, this is a red circle, this is a blue circle.  Of course that’s all said AND written on the screen in Japanese!  The repetitive pattern makes the connection between the word, both its printed version and the way it sounds, and the object that it represents, very clear and easy for kids to understand.  And it makes it really easy for me to catch on and be able to reinforce it with the kids.

Little Pim Bear

We’ve learned several new Japanese words watching this Playtime DVD.  The objects are all familiar to kids: blocks, dress up, boats, and other play things.  Starting with things that are part of kids’ every day lives make them comfortable using their new language skills which builds confidence to try even more new words!  And there are over 60 words and phrases in this DVD alone so there’s plenty to learn.  Plus, that cute little bear, Little Pim, guides you through the video.  My kids love that guy!
