I was provided with a complimentary copy of The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition to facilitate this review. The opinions in this post are 100% mine. You can read my full disclosure policy here.
Do you have a movie that reminds you of your childhood? I have a couple but one that really stands out to me is The Little Mermaid. I was only 11 when it came out but when I really started watching it over and over I was about 13. I babysat for a family that lived across the street from me and they had the VHS tape (yes, I’m *that* old) and I watched that movie with those sweet little kids more times than I can count. We were all mesmerized. The music, the story, the beautiful images. It was magic. Now that I have kids of my own we absolutely have a collection of Disney movies and I’m so excited that we now have The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition on our shelf!
Why Diamond Edition?
The picture is even better now. Viewers can experience the film in high definition Blu-ray 3D™, Blu-ray and High Definition Digital platforms. If you have a big fancy TV, not the kind you probably had back in 1989 when the film was released, the Diamond Edition is amazing. You know how colorful so many parts of the movie are! Think about Sebastian singing ‘Under the Sea’ with all of his sea creature friends.
Bonus features, bonus features, bonus features. Oh, and did I mention bonus features? After we watched the movie the other night we went through all of the bonus features. The favorite for my daughter was Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Part of Your World” video. Besides the song being awesome, the video is SO cool! It’s a really neat, modern take on the story behind the song. We love it!
Harold the Merman is my favorite bonus feature. Harold’s story got cut out of the final movie due to time constraints so this was really cool to see. It’s a great illustration of what Ursula does to merfolk when they get on her bad side! You have to check it out. This is awesome!
Here are some more fantastic bonus features!
Broadway Moments
This is another favorite for me. Check out a special behind-the-scenes moment where lyricist Howard Ashman coaches Jodi through “Part of That World” instilled with his famous Broadway sensibility. I really love to see what goes into making these Disney movies and this is a great insider clip.
Fitting In and Pop Music
Ron Clements and John Musker discuss how Howard Ashman incorporated pop music into the soundtrack and the way he made the music seamlessly fit into the story. Sebastian singing “Under the Sea” is one of my favorite parts of the movie so this was fun to learn about!
Live Action Dinner and Improv
Omigosh, this is so neat! I had no idea they had a real live Ariel actress to help create the character we see on the screen! Take a look at the live action reference scenes that inspired the animation for the dinner scene featuring a dinglehopper and a snarfblat!
Live Action Eric
And here is Prince Eric’s live action reference model. Did you know they did this when creating the characters? So fun to see! Did you notice that they even have someone playing Max the dog?!
I love The Little Mermaid as much now as I did then. Maybe more.
I haven’t watched The Little Mermaid in a while. So when we got The Diamond Edition we planned a family movie night and all four of us tuned in to watch. I was definitely as into it as my kids, maybe more. Now that I have them to share it with I think it’s even better. It’s always great when you can share something you love with your kids and they love it too. I find that a lot with Disney movies but the ones that were really a big part of my childhood…those are special.
I think The Little Mermaid really is *the* Disney movie for my generation and it’s just so cool to see it made even better for our kids. The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition is part of your world now!
