In today’s world, Internet access at home is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. The Comcast Internet Essentials program is opening the door to the Internet for families all over Pennsylvania.
This post is in partnership with Comcast. All opinions are my own. You can read my full Disclosure Policy here.
With two kids in middle school, we are using ALL the WiFi in this house. I don’t know about your school district, but in ours, each student has a laptop beginning in 5th grade. And that laptop is the lifeline to their education.
Internet Access at Home Is No Longer a Luxury
Both of my kids bring their laptops to and from school with them each day, and textbooks are a thing of the past. (What am I, a dinosaur?!)
All course materials, teacher instructions, video tutorials, assignments, quizzes, tests, you name it, are all done online.
I should add that I work from home as a blogger, and my husband is an IT guy. What does it mean for families today? Internet access isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity. It’s how nearly all communication is sent from teachers, bosses, clients, coaches, friends, and family.
And that means another hefty monthly bill that some families just can’t add to the budget. Comcast recognizes that the need for reliable, affordable Internet and has a solution that allows millions of people in their service area right here in Pennsylvania to stay connected, affordably.
Comcast Internet Essentials Program
Comcast has recently announced a huge expansion in the availability of their Internet Essentials Program, which is designed to make Internet access available to ALL families.
So what is this program? Internet Essentials is an Internet package for eligible customers with disabilities, low-income families, low-income veterans, seniors, and other groups of people that might have barriers to acquiring Internet access at home.
There is no contract, no credit check, no installation fee. Just an easy-to-use Internet package that’s also easy to afford.
This program began in 2011, and has since connected over 8 million people from more than 2 million households to the Internet, many for the first time in their lives. Can you imagine how life changing this?
And their latest expansion makes so many more people in Pennsylvania eligible to apply. Comcast WANTS to make the Internet accessible to everyone, and I think that is pretty awesome.
Learn How to Apply + Spread the Word
To be eligible to apply to the program, low-income applicants simply need to show they are participating in one of more of a dozen different federal assistance programs (things like Medicaid, SNAP, and a bunch of others).
If this isn’t you, it’s someone you know. My kids’ school offers ‘homework help’ after school each day to kids that don’t have Internet access at home. Don’t you think those kids would like to go home like all of the other students? Absolutely.
And Internet Essentials from Comcast can make that possible. Send this post or this link to your school Principal or Guidance Counselor. Send it to your church. Post it on Facebook. I guarantee you someone in your Pennsylvania community is going to appreciate it.
How do I feel about my family needing ALL the WiFi? It’s a double-edged sword of an amazing resource, and probably a little too much tech for the kids, but one thing is for sure: it’s not going anywhere.
People of all ages and from all walks of life should have access to the web, and I’m so thankful Comcast agrees and is making it possible for all of us to plug in together.
