I received the Hot Wheels Car Maker from Kmart to facilitate my review. The opinions in this post are 100% mine. You can read my full disclosure policy here.
Want to get your kids some of the hottest toys of 2013! Check out this year’s Kmart Fab 15 Toys for the most popular toys for kids of all ages. I had the opportunity to review one and when I saw the Hot Wheels Car Maker on the list I knew my kids would love it. And they did!
The kit comes with everything you need to make 10 cars. It plugs in, so no batteries needed which I love. Unless older kids are using it I’d say some adult supervision is necessary but the kids can definitely help with every step. Mom or Dad might just want to keep one eye on the process!
Included in the kit is the actual car maker, 2 molds to make both a truck and a car, 3 chassis or sets of wheels so they actually do go like a real Hot Wheels car when you’re done, 11 wax sticks (you can buy more of these whenever you need them), a little tool to clean up any wax that spills out of the molds, and a big sheet of decals.
Being as excited as we were to test this guy out, we didn’t take the time to read the directions first. It didn’t really cause any problems except that it took us longer to actually get a car made, so learn from my mistake and read the directions. They’re very easy to follow. You pretty much plug it in, pop your mold in the door, put a wax stick in the top, and hit the silver button to let it warm up. When it’s done, you’ll be prompted to pull the handle down which pushes the melted wax into the mold. Then you let it cool and take your car out. The whole time directions are given so you know when to do everything.
Once the car comes out you can use the little design tool to pop the car out of the mold and pick off any pieces of stray wax. Then have some fun decorating with decals. My son had a great time doing this, even though he didn’t exactly put them in quite the right spots. Enjoying making it is what counts, right?!
And here’s our finished product! We make a couple of other cars after this one and the colors did seems to blend together just a bit, like not exactly all of the purple came out when we made this truck so the next car had some streaks of purple in it. I actually thought it was kind of cool looking like that!
