I participated in Mom Blog Tour at the Summer Fancy Food Show (#MomBlogTourFF) on behalf of Wendy’s Bloggers and received McCann’s Irish Oatmeal® products to facilitate my review. The opinions here are my own. You can read my full disclosure policy here.
Breakfast, as we all know, is the most important meal of the day. It’s probably the meal I struggle with the most because with the exception of weekends, I need it done pronto. Healthy, filling, and fast can be a tricky combo, so I was excited to learn more about how McCann’s Irish Oatmeal® could bridge the gap between quick and easy, and a better-for-you option.
I had the opportunity to chat with McCann’s Irish Oatmeal at the Summer Fancy Food Show in NYC last month and was so impressed not only with their products, but with their history and commitment to quality. I’ve been eating oatmeal off and on for a long time, and their products really are different and better.
McCann’s Irish Oatmeal Products
These Microwavable Cups are my go-to for breakfast these days. SO easy and they’re delicious in four different flavors: Maple Brown Sugar, Apple Cinnamon, Vanilla Honey, and Original. They’re all good but the Vanilla Honey is my top fave.
A few things I love about these: First of all, they’re so easy to make. Add cold water to the fill line and then microwave for about one and a half minutes (I discovered my time was closer to one minute to avoid an overflow situation). If you have hot water on the stove, you can use that too. Add it to the fill line and replace the lid and allow to steep for a few minutes.
My husband usually grabs something to take to work with him for breakfast (we’re not exactly morning people here) and I love that he can grab one of these cups (or keep a bunch at his office!) and have something healthy and filling every day.
The pictures above show what these cups look like pre- and post-prep. I like my oatmeal a little thicker so I added a little less water. Yum. I’m telling you, this oatmeal is SO good. It really tastes better, more substantial, than any instant oatmeal I’ve had.
McCann’s Irish Oatmeal’s oats come from small family-owned farms in Ireland which has been the case for over 150 years. They seriously know what they’re doing. These Steel Cut Oats are rich and wholesome because of minimal processing.
What I noticed most is that they have a really great flavor to them that is satisfying. You know how some oatmeal is like eating…nothing? Cardboard? McCann’s Irish Oatmeal is not that way at all. If you’re an oatmeal eater, this brand is going to stand out to you, and if you’re not I’d really suggest trying it. I honestly think it tastes better!
As we’ve become more aware of what we put in our bodies, Non-GMO products have gained popularity. Wholesome products are important to McCann’s Irish Oatmeal, too, and they’ve earned their first Non-GMO Certification from the Non-GMO Project for three of their core products — Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal in the 28oz. Tin, Quick & Easy Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal in the 24 oz. Canister, and Quick Cooking Rolled Oats in the 16 oz. Box.
What does that mean? It means that there’s an independent body, the Non-GMO Project, that verifies that these products are made according to best practices for GMO (“genetically modified organisms”) avoidance. It means we get a high-quality product to feed our families. Yes, please.
The awesome thing about McCann’s Irish Oatmeal is that it’s not only great for breakfast, but it’s a perfect snack. Those microwavable cups hit the spot right around 3pm when I start thinking about a candy bar. And they’re so versatile in recipes, too.
I love finding tasty ways to work steel cut oats into recipes I know my kids will like. I feel good about what they’re eating, AND it fills them up. Moms, that means you don’t need to be breaking out snacks every 30 minutes. Sign me up.
Easy No-Bake Energy Balls for Kids Recipe
I used McCann’s Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal to make these Easy No-Bake Energy Balls for Kids and they were a serious hit. And let’s just be honest here – these are a treat for adults and kids alike. But throw in a little colorful chocolate and you’ll catch any kid’s eye.
This recipe is incredibly easy to make. Basically you throw everything in the mixer, turn it on, stir in the chocolate pieces, roll the balls, and you’re done.
And look at all that yummy goodness hidden in these treats.
A double batch is just as easy to make as a single, and they really do go fast so I’d highly recommend doubling this recipe. Here it is:
- 1 cup McCann's Irish Steel Cut Oats
- ¾ cup peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons agave nectar
- ½ tablespoon coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter protein powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup mini candy-coated pieces
- Place all ingredients except the candy pieces in the stand mixer bowl.
- Mix until combined. Stop to scrape down the sides as needed.
- Add the candy pieces and stir them in by hand so they don't get broken up.
- Scoop hunks of the mix and roll into balls about 1" in diameter. Just eyeball it. The size is totally up to you!
- Store in refrigerator in a covered container.
If you want to mix it up a bit, try a chocolate protein powder instead of peanut butter. Don’t have mini candies on hand? Substitute chocolate chips instead. Honey would work as well as the agave nectar, too.
I’ll be honest and say I’m not an expert on non-GMO but since my main ingredient was McCann’s Non-GMO Steel Cut Oats, I did try to select ingredients that I thought were the most wholesome and opted for organic options when possible. This is a really easy recipe to keep as clean as possible for your kids which I love. And those little candy pieces are too small to even mention, right? Balance and moderation, friends.
No-Bake is my favorite when it comes to a quick afternoon or late-night snack. Easy, delicious, and healthy. They’re a total win! I’m excited to dream up some new recipes using McCann’s Irish Oatmeal. What would you make with them?
