Disney has provided me with an expense paid trip to Hollywood for the Disney Planes Event in exchange for my review of the events of the trip. No other compensation was given. The opinions and experiences in my posts are 100% mine. You can read my full disclosure policy here.
Woohoo! It’s finally here! Disney Planes hits theaters on Friday August 9 and we can finally all take our kids to see it. I was so fortunate to be able to screen the film in Los Angeles during the #DisneyPlanesEvent with a fantastic group of bloggers. So I’ve been bursting at the seams with excitement since then, waiting not-so-patiently for the release so that I could share Planes with my kids. My kids are already in love with it since dear ole Mom can’t stop talking about it, and I know you and your kids are going to love it too.
From above the world of “Cars” comes “Disney’s Planes,” an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing—and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar. “Disney’s Planes” takes off in theaters on Aug. 9, 2013.
Need a reason to hit the theater and see Planes? I’ll give you 10 (plus a bonus!).
1. Dusty.
Dusty is the main character in Planes and he’s so sweet. I fell in love with him immediately. He’s a hard worker and reliable, but this crop duster wants to do more with his life than what he was made for. He’s the underdog, and who doesn’t love to root for an underdog to succeed?
2. El Chupacabra.
Easily my favorite Planes character, El Chu is a riot. He’s sincere, kind, friendly, and quick-witted. He quickly becomes Dusty’s friend in the movie despite the fact that they’re both competing in the same race. And his one-liners are hysterical!
3. A lesson in friendship.
As the underdog Dusty gets a lot of flak from many of the other planes in the race. Lucky for him he has the best team of support with his friends Chug, Dottie, and Skipper. If you’ve seen Cars I’d say that Skipper reminds me a lot of Doc Hudson: the voice of experience and expertise, but he has a few issues of his own to work through. And when he does your hear just swells for him.
4. Go after your dreams.
Dusty is an unlikely racing plane. He’s a crop duster, for goodness sakes! But it’s all he can dream about and he doesn’t give up. I always love that message in kids’ movies. Reach for it, don’t give up. If you work hard and believe in yourself anything is attainable, even when there are people telling you it’s not.
5. An International Sky Show.
Aside from the fantastic plot the movie is just beautiful. The International Race includes contestants from all over the world so we get to see all kinds of styles and accents on the planes. Just wait until you see Ishani. She’s soooo elegant. And while the planes are in the different legs of the race we get to explore the globe with them. The scenes from India are probably my favorite, so peaceful and calm.
6. Dottie is Da Bomb.
Dottie is voiced by Teri Hatcher (check out my interview with her!) and I absolutely loved her character. She’s Dusty’s mechanic, all cute and purple, and also smart and loyal and a solid friend and voice of reason in the film. I just love to see a female in a non-traditional role in a kids’ movie. She’s such a strong little character for Dusty to lean on. And I had so much fun playing Dottie myself. Go ahead, take a look for a laugh.
7. You’ll laugh.
Something I love about Disney movies is the humor sprinkled throughout that make both kids and adults crack up. Planes is no different and there are so many hilarious scenes. El Chu is probably in most of them. See reason #2 above. Love him!
8. You’ll cry.
Okay, hopefully you won’t actually cry but you might feel a little lump in your throat. There are moments of defeat, sadness and loneliness in the movie. Such is life, right? These are challenges we all face and have to overcome and of course the cool thing is that we get to see the Planes we love keep flying along through their hard times until they reach the light. But while they’re there we feel for them. Isn’t that so amazing? You can feel the same emotions you would for a person for an animated plane? That’s a testament to some serious Disney talent.
9. The kids can get psyched up at home before the show.
Check out all these fun activities from Disney’s FlewTube included some cah-UTE Planes-inspired recipes! Your kids can race Planes like mine in the video above. (By the way, Rochelle won.) Just print them off here and follow the directions. (Moms, this literally kept my kids busy for hours one day. Two thumbs up in my book!) And here are some more activity sheets and Planes coloring pages for your kids to have some fun with before (or after) the movie! If they like online games check out Propwash Pursuit and Jetstream Racers for some fast-paced fun.
10. See a new Disney classic while it’s on the big screen.
I can tell you now that as soon as Planes is out on DVD it will be in our home collection. My kids LOVE their Disney movies and I do, too. I’ve been collecting them since before they were born. But there’s nothing like seeing a movie on the big screen. And Planes is larger than life with these awesome, colorful and aerodynamic machines twisting and zipping through the skies. I definitely think this is one to catch in the theater if you can!
Bonus: Jamba Juice is celebrating Planes, too!
Need yet another reason? To kick off the release of Planes into theaters and to make it even more fun for all of you they’ve given me a $50 Jamba Juice Gift Card to give away to one lucky Planes fan! Head on over here to enter through August 20, 2013.
Get out there and go see Planes and come back and tell me what you think! You can check out the Disney Planes website for more Planes fun, and keep up with all the latest Planes news by following on Facebook and Twitter!
