What Is A Time Capsule

A time capsule is a sealed container that holds memories and keepsakes of a certain event or period of time.
Time capsules are meant to preserve a piece of history to be revisited in the future, usually several years down the road. This year was anything but dull, so it’s the perfect time to capture the things that stood out to us the most, and save it to relive (do we want to relive any of this?!) in 10 years or so.
How to Make a Time Capsule
Time capsules can be made using any kind of sealed container. Some people bury them under the ground, but this isn’t really necessary.
Choose a container that you like best. You can go with something like this metal time capsule, or a glass jar with a lid works well. Those are fun for the kids because they can decorate the outside with markers or stickers.
There are some ready-made kids’ time capsules on Amazon, too. And in a pinch, a shoebox is fine..
Then fill your container with your keepsakes, memories, and things that will help you recall the highlights (or lowlights!) of this year.
2020 Time Capsule Ideas
Believe it or not, one day this crazy year will be long behind us, and it would be so interesting to look back on a time capsule and remember all the things that made this year one that will go down in history.
Here are a few ideas to include:
- This completed printable
- A mask
- An election mailer
- A time capsule journal with writing prompts
- Photos of the time you spent at home (doing puzzles, baking cakes, etc)
- Newspaper clippings
- A letter to yourself about your experience living through a pandemic
- Classwork from virtual learning
- A receipt for takeout you ordered to support a local business
- Letters you or your kids received from quarantined friends/family during the stay-home period
- A lock of hair from an at-home haircut
Let the kids include some things that remind them of how they spent their time in 2020.
I would advise against including anything with batteries, or any kind of digital storage. Technology changes quickly and you may have trouble retrieving the contents of a USB drive, memory card, etc.

2020 is a year that will go down in history. Use this printable and time capsule idea, or some other way you find, to preserve what you remember, and what stood out most to you. You’ll want to look back on it one day!
