The Elephant and Piggie Like Reading! Series Turns 10
My kids are just as bookwormy as I am and one of our favorite children’s series, Elephant & Piggie Like Reading!, created by Mo Willems, is turning 10! Over the years we’ve read so many of these books, and even though I do think both of my kids have kind of moved on from the beginner reading level they are geared toward, the characters and sweet and funny stories still manage to hold their interest. They’re just those kind of books kids come back to.
So let’s celebrate! 10 years is a big deal! Read on to hear about the newest book in the collection, get my top 10 Elephant & Piggie books, see pics of our party (yes, we really did celebrate!) and enter for your chance to win a great giveaway.
The Good For Nothing Button
The newest book in the Elephant & Piggie series is The Good for Nothing Button by Charise Mericle Harper. It released in early May 2017 and it’s a new favorite around here (especially when paired with that actual red button!). Anyone want to guess how many times that thing has been pushed in my house in the past week?
Yellow Bird has a button. It does . . . nothing! It is a good for nothing button.
Red Bird and Blue Bird are excited to try the button. But when they press it, they discover that the button makes them happy. Happy is something! A flabbergasted Yellow Bird insists the button does nothing. But it sure does seem to be making him mad. Mad is something!
The hilarious debate that follows takes readers on an emotional roller coaster that pokes at the power of imaginative play.
The gist of the book is that even though the button does ‘nothing’ the reactions it invokes are definitely ‘something’! It has the same effect on my family! The book is geared toward children ages 4-8, so my son is on the upper end of that but definitely found this book highly entertaining. And so did I!
Top 10 Favorite Elephant & Piggie Books
Elephant & Piggie books are so much fun to read and I swear, the kids just don’t outgrow them. Even my 11 year-old daughter will sit down and laugh with us when we’re reading one of these. The characters are just so much fun! Not sure where to start building your Elephant & Piggie collection? Here are my top 10 favorite picks!
- The Thank You Book
- The Good for Nothing Button
- We Are Growing
- The Cookie Fiasco
- I Really Like Slop!
- I Will Take A Nap
- Should I Share My Ice Cream?
- Waiting Is Not Fun
- I Am Going
- We Are In A Book
Which ones have you read with your kids? The Thank You Book is my favorite, for sure, but they are all so darn cute!
Celebrate 10 Years of Elephant & Piggie Books
You can’t have a 10th ‘birthday’ without a party! A party with a book theme is right up our alley and this one was so fun. Wait until you see the decorations!
The folks at Disney Hyperion sent us a lot of fun party supplies. These balls were probably the biggest hit of the day! I am a big fan of using the actual books as table decor – easy and colorful, right? So I propped those up along with some wrapping paper that doubled as a table runner.
The Good For Nothing Button straws were so cute in our blueberry water!
You have to have some fun decor for a great party and aren’t these just the CUTEST lanterns? So easy to make! You can grab paper lanterns at Target or really anywhere you can get room decor and party supplies, and then print out these templates with instructions to add the Elephant and Piggie features. I love these! I just might keep them up on my dining room chandelier for a while.
For snacks, we had a little popcorn and our blueberry water, and then the kids made their own elephant crepe. So cute and SO easy!
This is pretty self explanatory but it’s just a crepe (look for them in the produce section if you don’t want to bother making them from scratch), a banana cut into pieces, whipped cream, a strawberry piece and 2 blueberries. The kids loved making these as much as they loved eating them!
After we read some of the Elephant & Piggie books together (and laughed a ton!) and had our snacks, I set the kids up with these printable Elephant & Piggie activity sheets. You can print them too!
There are some really fun creative projects here: coloring, connect the dots, and even fill-in-the-word-bubbles which generated some interesting responses!
This little boy had a ton of fun partying with Elephant & Piggie!
