DOLE Fruit N’ Spice
My kids go through fruit like crazy and I try to get more and more of it into my diet, too. I admit I’m not great at that but I have gotten better thanks to DOLE Fruit n’ Spice. Fruit n’ Spice are brand new products on the market and you’ll find them in your freezer section.
I was introduced to this product at the Summer Fancy Food Show in NYC this past summer and immediately loved it. This makes healthy snacking tasty and SO easy!
DOLE Fruit n’ Spice comes in three varieties:
- Honey Lime Pineapple Chunks
- Cinnamon Apple Slices
- Chili Lime Mango Chunks
They are all natural, real frozen fruit combined with chef-inspired spice blends. And they’re so full of flavor! I love this spin on making fruit fun to eat.
I was able to try all three varieties. The Cinnamon Apple Slices are so yummy. They remind me of an apple pie (or apple dumplings as you’ll see!). The Chili Lime Mango Chunks have a bit of heat to them and my first thought was that they’d be awesome in a salsa recipe.
My hands-down favorite are the Honey Lime Pineapple Chunks. These are SO good. I pour a bunch into a ramekin and snack on them, even half frozen. They are perfectly flavored and sweet and fresh. I love them.
DOLE Fruit ‘n Spice are so versatile, too. As I mentioned, they make healthy snacking really easy, but they’re also delicious in so many recipes. If you like smoothies, these are a great way to kick them up with some new flavors. And if you like dessert, well…I gotcha covered.
Old Fashioned Apple Dumplings Recipe
Fall screams for all things apple and apple dumplings have to be my favorite apple dessert. We have a little farm show every October in my town and there’s a food stand there that sells them and we go over just to get one every year. Sooo good!
The DOLE Fruit N’ Spice Cinnamon Apple Slices are perfect for making Old Fashioned Apple Dumplings a bit easier (no apples to chop!) and just as delicious.
I mean…. Just look at that. This is a pan of beauty right here.
An apple dumpling is best served warm with vanilla ice cream. (They charge extra for the ice cream at the farm show, and I pay it!) Here’s the recipe so you can make these at home. We’ll probably still go to the farm show but I might just save $5 this year. 😉
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Butter a 9x13 baking dish. Dump the apples from bags into a large bowl and separate any that are frozen together. Use a muffin tin and arrange them in the shape of an apple in 6 muffin cups. Set aside. Prepare the dough. If you are using store bought dough, use one sheet which will make 3 dumplings. If you are using the recipe above, use one of the two balls of dough, which makes 3 dumplings. Roll dough into a large rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Cut into 3 pieces. Repeat with the other half of your dough so you have a total of 6 pieces. Cut butter into 8 pieces. Set aside. In a small dish, combine the cinnamon and nutmeg. Time to assemble the dumplings: Place one piece of butter down the center of one of your apple groups in the muffin tin. Pick up all of the apples as a group, and place them in the center of one of the pieces of dough. Use about 1/6 of your brown sugar (just eyeball it - you're trying to divide that 1/2 cup of brown sugar evenly between 6 dumplings) and sprinkle over top of the apples, pushing some around the bottom of the apples. Sprinkle about 1/6 of your cinnamon and nutmeg mixture over the top of the apples (eyeball it again, you just want to try to evenly divide this mixture between the 6 dumplings). Wrap the apple with the dough by joining opposite corners with slightly wet fingers. Pinch to completely seal the apples in the dough. Place in the prepared baking dish. Repeat these steps with the remaining ingredients until you have 6 dumplings. In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, vanilla, and remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Boil for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and carefully pour over dumplings. Bake in preheated oven for 50-60 minutes. To serve, place dumpling in a dessert bowl and pour sauce over the top. Great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! These dumplings are even better the next day! After they're cooled the sauce thickens up nicely and they're delicious reheated. Just don't forget the ice cream!Old Fashioned Apple Dumplings Recipe
