If you know me or have been reading my blog for any length of time you’ll know I’m sort of a nut about reusable bags. I got hooked on them last fall when my daughter started kindergarten and I realized all the plastic baggies that would be thrown out daily between packing lunch and snack. Ree-diculous. I couldn’t see wasting all that money on plastic bags or creating all that trash on a daily basis. So I started scoping out reusable bags. I found some awesome ones that I just love from ecolunchgear!

Turns out I’m not the only mom who doesn’t want school lunch to turn into a mass of trash. Well, of course. But not only was owner Tina Beatty a mom on a mission to go green, she knew how to sew. So she started creating her own reusable bags in 2008. I love a good take-a-great-idea-and-run-with-it story, don’t you?
ecolunchgear products are made in the US and supplies come from Fair Trade companies. The business is based in Michigan and nothing is outsourced. They walk the walk so much that Green American has recognized ecolunchgear as a green company. Products are made with 100% organic cotton and lined with nylon that’s free of phthalates and other nasties you don’t want near your food. And because they’re lined you can put wet foods in them like fruit and cheese.

These products are practical and oh-so stylin’. I love, love, love the patterns and colors that these bags come in! Check out the ones that I got. Isn’t this pattern so modern and pretty? Love it. And they’re easy to use, just velcro them closed. It’s genius how the snack bag opens up to serve as a placemat, too. I would prefer my kids not eat off the germy lunch table at school or picnic table at the park. Great idea, right? The label on these bags is big enough to write your child’s name on, too. You can send these to school with the kids and not worry that they won’t come home.

They’re easy to take care of and use over and over again. While you can machine wash these bags, I highly recommend you hand wash them. It takes just a few seconds and your products will last a lot longer. If you do occassionally throw them in the wash, just fold the little velcro tabs down so they don’t stick to any of the rest of your laundry. Another great idea! Velcro can cause real problems in the wash. The entire bag opens up flat so there are no crumbs hiding in the corners. I think ecolunchgear thought of everything. 🙂

If you’re still using plastic baggies to pack school lunches or take snacks on the road, consider making a change this upcoming school year. I made the change last year and it’s such an easy way to save money (I hardly ever buy plastic bags anymore) and do something good for our planet. And guess who else thinks so? My first grader. Check out the wide selection of bag styles and really beautiful patterns from ecolunchgear. We love our bags and they’ve quickly become a favorite in my collection.
