Have an abundance of fresh herbs in your garden? Throw them in a cocktail! From basil to mint to lavender and more, there’s something for everyone in this round up of fresh herb summer cocktail recipes.
Is there anything better than gardening in the summertime? Fresh veggies from the garden are a summer favorite in our house.
If you don’t have a green thumb or the space for a vegetable garden, herb gardens might be right up your alley! Herb gardens are easy to tend to and don’t require much maintenance. Adding fresh herbs to your recipes really brings a bright flavor to your dishes.
Once you start your herb garden, you’ll find that you will have an overabundance of herbs. They grow quickly! While you can dry them or use fresh herbs in your cooking, you can also use those fresh herbs in summertime cocktails. And that, my friends, is right up MY alley!
The Best Herbs for Summer Cocktails
If you are planning an herb garden for your summer cocktails, there are some staple herbs you should include.
Mint: Mint is probably the most commonly used fresh herb for cocktails. It is cool and refreshing. Mint can be muddled or used as a garnish or infusion. An important tip: Mint is invasive and will spread like crazy, taking over your garden. Put it in a pot and keep it contained.
Basil: Basil is an all-purpose herb that can add great flavor to gin, tequila or rum drinks. Muddle, use as a garnish or create a simple basil syrup to use in cocktails.
Rosemary: Rosemary has a rich, woody flavor and can be added whole or muddled into your cocktail.
Sage: Sage has a very distinct flavor so make sure you use sparingly! Muddled, infused into spirits or prepared in a simple syrup, sage adds a savory level to your drink.
Lavender: Lavender is another herb that you shouldn’t go overboard with! Lavender is best prepared into a simple syrup for your summertime drink.
Another benefit to these herbs? Many of them keep the bugs away! Plant your garden on your deck or patio where you can sip on your cocktail without the bugs.
