The Secret Life of Pets is available to own TODAY! The Blu-Ray and DVD released today, December 6, and we’re so excited to have this in our home collection. We LOVE our pets, and The Secret Life of Pets was one of our favorites in the theater this past summer.
This movie is all about what our pets do after we leave for the day to go to work or school. Don’t you wonder? Sometimes I think they sleep all day but it turns out they have quite a life during our normal business hours! The filmmakers, the same people who created Despicable Me, captured pets’ personalities so well in The Secret Life of Pets. I think all of us will see our pets in at least one of the lovable characters.
Last night we had a really fun family movie night, with the pets of course, and I’m sharing what we love about this movie on Blu-Ray, where you can get it, and a peek at our pet-themed event! This movie is perfect for bringing the family together. It’s full of laughs and heart, and if you’re like me and always include a new movie under the tree for the kids, this one is PERFECT for a gift!
The Secret Life Of Pets on Blu-Ray
I was sent the Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack Target Exclusive that includes 4 pages of decals. The combo pack comes with the Blu-ray, DVD, and a Digital copy. I love having that digital copy so I can add the movie to the kids’ tablets – perfect to keep them entertained while we’re on a long car ride. The extras in this set are just awesome!
Use the wall decals to decorate your room, car, office, laptop. You can see Sam has found one that speaks to him.
The Secret Life of Pets – Trailer – Own it 12/6 on Blu-ray
In their fifth fully animated feature-film collaboration, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures present The Secret Life of Pets, a comedy about the lives our pets lead when we leave for work or school. Max, voiced by Louis C.K., is a loyal terrier living a perfectly happy existence until his owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper) brings home Duke (Eric Stonestreet) a big, boisterous mutt she finds at the shelter. When Max and his unruly new “roommate” slip away from their dog-walker, they find themselves lost in the urban jungle of New York City. In an attempt to stay ahead of animal control and a rebel band of abandoned pets led by an unhinged bunny named Snowball (Kevin Hart), they put aside their differences to survive the epic journey back home.
With an all-star voice cast including Louis C.K. (TV’s Louie), Eric Stonestreet (TV’s Modern Family), Kevin Hart (Ride Along Series), Jenny Slate (Zootopia), Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Lake Bell (TV’s Children’s Hospital), Dana Carvey (Wayne’s World), Hannibal Buress (Neighbors series), Bobby Moynihan (TV’s “Saturday Night Live”), Steve Coogan (Minions) and Albert Brooks (Finding Dory).
Bonus Features
The Secret Life of Pets on Blu-Ray includes nearly an hour of bonus content. I watched it with my kids and this is really good stuff! First, there are 3 really funny mini-movies. One of these debuted in theaters and now it’s available to own. Take a look below:
The Secret Life of Pets – Mower Minions Pt 3
So funny! The other two mini-movies are the all-new Norman Television and Weenie, also fantastic!
Other Bonus Features Include:
- All About The Pets
- Animals Can Talk: Meet The Actors
- Hairstylist To The Dogs
- The Best of Snowball
- More!
In All About The Pets a couple of the voice actors are introduced to a variety of animals. It’s educational and entertaining. Really good bonus content here about how the movie was made, too. I like the stuff that teaches while it entertains and there’s a lot of that here.
The Secret Life of Pets – A Lovely Day
The video for A Lovely Day is one of our favorite bonuses!
Movie Night (With The Pets)
For The Secret Life of Pets movie night, you have to bring out the creatures. This is one of our cats, Tiny, and she wasn’t exactly thrilled to be woken up but she perked up when we got the snacks out. She’s a bit like Chloe in the movie. All cats are a bit like Chloe, aren’t they?
My dog Sam was ready for the party too. If you want the pets to show up, you need two things: food and blankets. Very simple formula to get them in attendance. Sam is my Max, which is my favorite character in the movie. Full of energy and love.
The human ‘animals’ were pretty excited for family movie night too! Do your kids just freak out every time you have a movie night? Mine LOVE it!
See? Bring the blankets and they will come. The floor is the place to be. I don’t know how they’re not hurting their necks here but this is how my kids choose to lay to watch TV. I love this scene where Tiberius and Gidget meet and she shows him who’s boss!
Be sure you don’t run out of snacks or you’re going to get this look. ha! This dog cracks me up.
Easy Pet-Themed Snacks
I want our family movie nights to be fun and unique, but I don’t want to kill myself getting ready for them. Luckily a pet theme is SO easy to pull together. First things first: serve your snacks in the dog dish. My kids got such a kick out of this! Goldfish crackers and Swedish fish are easy to pour right out of the bag into a bowl, and boom – done!
The real winner here is the whoopie pies. SO easy! I bought them all made at the grocery store along with small and large marshmallows. Carefully pull apart one whoopie pie and with a knife, gently take a small scoop of filling out. This is your ‘glue’ for the paws. The paws are 3 small marshmallows and one large one. I cut the large one in half so it stayed on and didn’t topple off. After grabbing a little filling with your knife, put the whoopie pie back together and spread a little of that filling on the ends of your marshmallows and stick them on the shell. See? So easy and even my husband was pretty impressed with how clever these are!
There were no leftovers so I’d say it was a hit! Pinterest has lots of ideas for pet-themed snacks if you want to spend more time on it. The important thing to know is that it can be very quick and easy to serve up some movie-related treats to make your The Secret Life of Pets movie night special!
Bring It Home!
Bring The Secret Life of Pets home for your own family movie night OR grab it as a gift for your favorite pet-lovers! Such a fun film for the entire family to watch together over the holidays. See more of THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS by following on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

We have two black labs and four cats. I am pretty sure that they wait for us to shut the door and then jump on and undo every single bed in the house. They rummage through sheets, towels, laundry baskets. Cats explore the counters. I wish we had a trail cam to watch! Can’t wait to see this movie.

We love making special snacks for our movie nights at home. We usually try to make 2 to 4 different ones that relate to the movie. A good one for this would be popcorn with animal-shaped gummies in it. Also, chocolate milkshakes could be muddy paws.

Haha, great picture of your dog with the poster that says “I expect treats for every single thing I do”. It looks like y’all had a fun night! It is such a creative movie.
