My kids (2nd and 5th grade) are avid readers and we’re always on the lookout for new series that capture their interest. This is especially the case with my son, the 2nd grader. He’s a great little reader, but I’ve had trouble getting him to transition from story books to chapter books, which are more at his reading level. But I think we’ve found a great solution!
I’ve partnered with Jimmy Patterson to introduce their brand new book that just released February 21, Sci-Fi Junior High. This book is geared toward middle-grades, generally 8 to 12 years old and it’s FUN, adventurous, and the way it’s laid out really keeps kids interested.
Sci-Fi Junior High
Sci-Fi Junior High is a really fun story that kids can relate to because it’s about a kid going to school. Of course he’s going to school in a new galaxy so that adds a bit of a fun twist!
Presented by James Patterson’s new children’s imprint, this gleefully illustrated space adventure is a laugh on every page. That’s a lot of laughs!
Kelvin Klosmo isn’t just the new kid at school – he’s the new kid in the galaxy! Welcome to Sci-Fi Junior High: an inter-galactic space station with students of all shapes, sizes, smells, and… slime content. As the son of Earth’s two most famous geniuses, Kelvin isn’t just the smartest kid in the world….he’s the smartest kid in the UNIVERSE. At least, that’s what everybody at Sci-Fi Junior High thinks.
So, maybe Kelvin lied a little about being a genius to fit in. And maybe a mad scientist is about to take over the universe unless Kelvin can stop him. Maybe everyone is doomed.
Well, at least Kelvin won’t have to worry about math homework anymore.
Sci-Fi Junior High is an out-of-this-world story about friendship, accepting our differences, and the fight against evil… bunnies. Yes, evil bunnies – don’t ask.
Right off the bat the cover art grabbed my son’s attention. And if your child is like mine and loves to read but doesn’t love seeing page after page filled with text, this book going to be a great fit.
The text is broken up with pictures, cartoons, and even some of the dialogue that’s written in larger, bold print. It makes the book fun to read and flow right along without it feeling like a chore for kids. Moms who are trying to fill out those daily reading calendars from school, you get me on this.
Besides the flow and feel of the book, the plot is awesome, too! It’s had us laughing over and over again and there are a lot of great moments of friendship and learning, too.
When asked what he hoped children would take away from the book, author Scott Seegert said the following. Fist bump, Scott!
Two things: first, don’t worry about trying to impress everybody. It’s okay to just be yourself. People (or, in this case, six-eyed aliens and giant talking slugs) will still like you—at least the ones worth having as friends. Secondly, we hope kids just have a blast reading it. We try our best to have something exciting or ridiculous or weird to read or look at on pretty much every page. We want even the most reluctant reader to keep turning the page to see what absurdness comes next.
About the Authors
This duo is so much fun together! Guess how they met. Their daughters play travel softball together. I feel like I’m missing an opportunity to collaborate with one of my soccer mom friends so I’m going to get on that. In the meantime, meet John and Scott:
John Martin is an illustrator, graphic artist, and website designer. He is the illustrator for the Vordak the Incomprehensible series. He lives in Farmington Hills, MI, with his wife, Mary, and their three children. You can find him on Twitter and Facebook.
