We all know summer produce is plentiful. Gimme all the watermelon and tomatoes, please. But in the winter? It’s a little tougher to find those healthy foods and keep the balance of fruits and veggies in check in your diet. I’m definitely more apt to eat a salad when it’s hot outside than over the winter months.
GIANT Food Stores nutritionists have sent me some recommendations to share with you on which winter produce to add to your plate until we can get back to those gardens. Clementines, Brussels sprouts, oranges, sweet potatoes, turnips, and pomegranates are all great options, and honestly my family loves a lot of these. We eat tons of Brussels sprouts and those little clementines are perfect snacks for the kids.
Pomegranates, pictured above in my local GIANT, are the GIANT nutritionists’ Handpicked Item for November. First of all, they are SO festive which is just perfect this time of year with the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
Pomegranates are also healthy! They’re a great source of fiber and vitamin C. The arils, or the little pieces of fruit inside, are versatile enough to turn into a savory side and a sweet dessert. Add them to salads or oatmeal. Even pop a few into an ice cube tray and freeze them to serve with your favorite beverages. So pretty!
You know what else is pretty? This Pomegranate Salsa. It’s made with simple, fresh ingredients so it’s deliciously flavorful and so healthy. Don’t you think this is perfect for the munchies before your big holiday meal? I’m going to make a batch to serve as guests arrive on Thanksgiving.
Here’s the recipe for you. You can definitely make this a couple of days ahead and store it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.
