I love that my kids love to read, and I have to tell you, now that my daughter is a bit older (6th grade), I really enjoy her books as much as my own. There’s some seriously good stuff in the middle-grade, young adult genres. Our friends at Disney-Hyperion just sent us this new middle-grade book, Click’d, available in stores and online now, and we’re about to start reading.
Click’d
One of the cool things about Click’d is that it combines a story of friendship (and maybe a bit of drama, and if you’ve got a daughter about my girl’s age you know aaaaalllll about this) with STEM topics, something I think we all want our girls exposed to. Both of my kids have specific STEM classes this year in school, and I love when we can find a way to tie in something fun like reading a new book with something educational.
New York Times best-selling author Tamara Ireland Stone combines friendship, coding, and lots of popcorn in her fun and empowering middle-grade debut.
Allie Navarro can’t wait to show her best friends the app she built at CodeGirls summer camp. Click’d pairs users based on common interests and sends them on a fun (and occasionally rule-breaking) scavenger hunt to find each other. And it’s a hit. By the second day of school, everyone is talking about Click’d.
Watching her app go viral is amazing. Leaderboards are filling up! Everyone’s making new friends. And with all the data Allie is collecting, she has an even better shot at beating her archenemy, Nathan, at the upcoming youth coding competition. But when Allie discovers a glitch that threatens to expose everyone’s secrets, she has to figure out how to make things right, even if that means sharing the computer lab with Nathan. Can Allie fix her app, stop it from doing any more damage, and win back the friends it hurt—all before she steps on stage to present Click’d to the judges?
Sounds great, doesn’t it? Click’d is recommended for ages 9+, so right about the middle-schoolish years. Friendship, drama, some life lessons in there, plus kids excited about coding. Love it. You can read an excerpt from the book here!
