Valentine’s Day is a good excuse for me to crafty. I like to be creative but don’t always find (or make) the time to do it. But when a good reason presents itself I can’t resist! So, like everyone else, I hunted down a good idea on Pinterest and then tweaked it to make it my own. I got my inspiration from Martha Stewarts’ Felt Fortune Cookies. Here’s how I made ours:
These are the supplies I used:
- Felt. And get the regular, soft felt. I found some that was glittery and stiffer thinking these fortune cookies would hold their shape more and I was WRONG. Didn’t work at all. Just go with regular ole’ felt!
- Scissors
- Craft glue
- Floral wire
- Thin ribbon
- Organza baggies
- Candy (or other goodies if you choose to include them)
- Paper for writing fortunes. I used scrapbooking paper and cut it into strips. (not pictured..I always forget something!)
(1).Start by folding each piece of felt in half an cutting along the fold. (2). You’ll end up with two long strips. (3). Cut those strips into about 4.5″ squares. You can use a ruler or eyeball it. This isn’t an exact science!
(1). Cut your squares into circles. If you have something to trace like a large can, go for it. I eyeballed it and just rounded off the corners. (2). Cut a piece of floral wire and a piece of ribbon for each circle. The wire should be shorter than the diameter of the circle so it doesn’t hang over the edges and the ribbon should be just slightly longer than the wire. You want to be able to totally cover the wire with the ribbon. (3). Make a line of glue in the center of each circle. Place the wire in the glue. Then cover the wire and glue with the ribbon. (4). Let these dry for at least an hour, several hours or overnight if you have time. Gets sloppy if that glue isn’t completely dry!
(1). Once the glue is dry fold each circle in half. (2). Bend the wire so that it makes an upside down ‘V’ and fix the felt so that it folds closed to look like a fortune cookie. (3). Put a few goodies, if you choose to, in your organza baggies and write out your fortunes. My daughter wrote some messages on scrapbooking paper. “You are nice to me”, “I love to play with you” and “You make me laugh” were a few! (4). Fold the fortunes in half and tuck them into the cookies. Put the cookies in the bag and tie it up!
They came out so cute! My kids were excited to take them to school to give to their friends. If you want to try to make these my advice is to do it in stages: Make all your circles first, glue all your wire and ribbon at once, make all your cookies next, etc. And if you can get some helpers (recruit those kids!) it will go even faster. And keep in mind these would be fun for any occasion. Just switch out the pinks and reds for some other colors and make adorable party favors!
Have fun and Happy Valentine’s Day!
