My husband and I got a new mattress when we got married…14 years ago. And we’ve known for a long time that neither of us was sleeping very well and we really needed to replace it. My partnership with Sleep Number came along at just the right time and I’m happy to say that we are BOTH sleeping soundly these days.
Maybe you’ve seen your local Sleep Number store in the mall and have been intrigued. Seriously, so many people have asked me about this bed and how we like it because I think SO many of us are sleeping on uncomfortable mattresses. The difference in your day-to-day when you are getting a good night’s sleep is hard to measure. I feel so much more refreshed in the morning after not tossing and turning all night long.
Sleep Number sent us their i8 bed and today I’m sharing pictures of how it works and our favorite features: the Sleep Number adjustment and the FlexTop.
Simple Set Up
Before I jump into how the bed functions, I wanted to touch on the set up. When you order your bed, Sleep Number will set up a time to deliver it that works for you and they’ll haul your old mattress away, too. Buh-bye!
The bed does plug in so it needs to be on a wall with an outlet and they say the set up takes up to 2 hours but the guys that delivered mine had me ready to roll within about 45 minutes, and that included the time they spent showing me how to use it. It’s a very easy process and you know what I did right away, right? Dove on that bed and tried to find my sleep number!
Find Your Number
The great thing about the Sleep Number beds is that both people sleeping in them can get a good night’s sleep. My husband likes a firmer mattress than I do so with traditional mattresses, it’s tricky to find something we’re both comfortable on. DualAir Adjustability allows him to choose his sleep number and me to choose mine – everyone is happy!
Because we got the FlexFit Base, the mattress is split in the middle about halfway down so that each side can lift to a sitting position independent of the other. More on that below.
You’ll get two remotes with the bed, one for each side, but they each operate both sides. So I sleep on the left side of the bed, and I can control my settings as well as the settings on the right side where my husband sleeps. So if I want to raise him up in the middle of the night I can do it. (I’m kidding, kidding. I’ve never done that. Yet. 😉 )
The Sleep Number ranges from 0-100 and adjusts in increments of 5. The lower the number, the softer the mattress. 100 is the firmest setting. We both started right around 50 and my played around with it for a few nights until we found where we were comfortable. 35 is my ideal sleep number and my husband is a 50. My dog also prefers 35 based on where he sleeps at night..with his mama!
Let Me See You Flex
The FlexFit base is an added option for Sleep Number beds and it allows you to raise and lower each side of the bed.
I love this for watching TV, reading in bed, or for when you are congested and it helps to elevate your head a bit while you sleep. Each side raises and lowers on its own, so you can be upright while your partner is lying flat.
The incline is controlled on the remote and is continuous. Just hold the up or down arrow in until you get in the position you want.
You can see everyone in the house wants a piece of sleeping on this bed! It’s so comfortable and I love that I can really customize it to be just perfect for me.
Let’s talk about sheets with that split down the middle of the bed. You can absolutely use the mattress pad and sheets that you have for your ‘old’ bed on this new one. They’ll fit right over the top perfectly. In fact, this bed has a much lower profile than our last giant pillowtop so my sheets fit even better.
The catch is that because the flex mattress lifts each side independently, you really can’t use that feature with a regular mattress pad and sheets. You need some that fit that split in the bed. Sleep Number carries them and we are using this AWESOME Total Protection Mattress Pad which I love. It’s not bulky or crinkly at ALL, but it’s waterproof and really protects that bed. I was a little worried about the contortionist act I might have to do to get it on that split in the middle but it was really easy and I had this one the bed in a couple of minutes, no problem. I have some sheets en route so stay tuned to see how they go on!

We are SO happy with this Sleep Number i8 bed. We’re both sleeping so much more comfortably and when you sleep better, life is just better. If you’re like me (like most people, probably) and have goals to be more productive in the new year, sleep is truly key to making that happen. When you’re tired because you tossed and turned all night, well, you might already know what that feels like the next day. A new bed that both of you can be comfortable in is a worthwhile investment. I’m kind of kicking myself for not doing this a LONG time ago.
You can see more of each of the types of Sleep Number beds on their website, plus find your local store if you really want to get in there and test them out. It’s so helpful to SEE them in person. Follow on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news and products as well!
