It’s back-to-school time! Woohoo! My kids just had their first day today and we were all excited for the start of a new year. Packing lunches are part of the daily weekday morning routine for us since my daughter decided long ago that school lunch was out of the question. Smart cookie. If you’re read my blog for any length of time you’ll know I’m a reusable bag freak and whatever you might normally pack in a plastic baggie I put in a reusable bag. Of course you can’t pack your whole lunch in a bag, so I was really excited to be able to review Rubbermaid’s new LunchBlox Sandwich Kits.
First genius thing about them: They come with a Blue Ice pack that actually attaches to the container. Sometimes I wonder if the ice packs I stick in my kids’ lunches just floats off into a corner of the lunch bag, serving no purpose at all. This rectangular ice pack actually snaps onto the bottom of the largest container, a sandwich sized box, so it stays in place, keeping your food cold. I packed up my kids’ favorite homemade pasta salad and I knew it was going to stay cold all day.
I also love the different size containers that come in the set. These are perfect portion sizes, especially for kids. My daughter got some grapes, crackers, and a little candy treat for dessert. All of the containers are made to snap together so it travels like one unit. I had a little trouble getting the smallest containers to attach to the lid of the sandwich container. But otherwise everything fit together and that wasn’t a big deal to me since it was all contained in my kids’ lunch bags anyway.
Rubbermaid has made all of these Lunchblox containers BPA-free, and they’re microwave, dishwasher, and freezer-safe. That’s awesome if you want to take something that needs to be heated up, and I love that you can freeze them. I will often freeze grapes and send them for snacks or lunches, figuring they’ll thaw out by the time it’s time to eat them. And just look how easy it is to get everything into a lunch bag without jamming it in there any which way. Love that!
And for me, the reusable bag freak, the best part about LunchBlox is that there’s no waste. There are no plastic baggies to throw out day after day, so there are no plastic baggies to buy and spend your money on. Buy a LunchBlox once, use it all school year. Works for us!
