We’re still going strong, fighting the ‘summer slide’ by reading as much as we can! My kids are participating in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. They’re doing awesome, racking up the minutes! So proud of them and I really feel good about where they’ll be when they go back to school – no backslide in reading skills.
Last month I shared with you an update on how we were doing and now that summer is in full swing, I’m back to show you all the places we’ve been reading AND be sure to read to the end. I have a great giveaway for you!
My Kids’ Summer Reading Goals – Update!
Reading outside is one of our favorite places to devour books. They have a pretty sweet set up in the backyard, don’t they? This photo is titled: The story of how I lost my hammock and papasan chair to my kids. 😉 Worth it to see them reading more!
The Summer Reading program this year has a science/STEM theme and since we always read before bed, one night we got out this Magic School Bus science kit. Omigosh you guys. SO fun! I learned a thing or two myself. Look, even the dog is into it! Thee kids took turns reading the instructions and doing the experiments.
My personal favorite place to read is on the beach. My daughter takes after me and that empty seat next to her is mine. We sat together and read (with our Energizer Bunny of course – see him peeking out?) for a long time toes in the sand. Bliss!
Reading doesn’t stop when you’re not at home. Taking your books with you is part of enjoying the adventure of reading! Where have your kids been reading this summer?
“Power Up & Read” With Energizer
This summer’s Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge Theme is “Power Up & Read” sponsored by Energizer. They’re encouraging kids to read all summer long and unlock 12 original short stories by bestselling children’s authors as kids reach reading milestones. Every time we log in and record our minutes my kids are on the lookout for these bonuses!
Each of the authors has written a unique short story using the same opening sentence, which is, “I glanced over my shoulder to make sure that no one had followed me into the shadowy library, then took a deep breath and opened the glowing book…”
This is SUCH a fun bonus to the Summer Reading Challenge!
Introducing #MondayMinutesGoal
In an effort to log as many minutes as possible through the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge AND to break the world record for summer reading, Scholastic is setting special weekly goals for young readers. Every Monday they’ll be announcing a #MondayMinutesGoal, the number of minutes for kids to read together in one week (by the following Monday).
Whether your child or student is reading independently aloud or together with you, let’s share their success and keep the momentum going! Here’s how:
- Have your child log his/her minutes on the SRC website or on a paper log/piece of paper
- Take a picture of him/her proudly displaying their minutes
- Share it on social using #MondayMinutesGoal and #SummerReading!
How Do I Sign My Kids Up?
It’s so easy! Just go to the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge website to sign your kids up. You’ll need to do them each individually, and I love this part about the program: you don’t need to enter any identifiable information about your children to get their accounts open. They can choose fun fictitious names so it’s completely safe. If they choose to just log in and record their minutes, great! And if they want to, there are tons of fun resources online including games, chats, and fun ways to customize their profile.
The program runs from May 4 through September 4, 2015 so there is still plenty of time to get your kids reading. In fact, it’s probably more important now than ever with school just around the bend!
Where Can I Learn More?
There’s all the info you’d need on the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge website. Parents, I love this huge set of resources for us to find books our kids will love. Follow Scholastic on Twitter to stay in touch with other summer readers and get lots of reading encouragement!
When you’re out shopping be sure to look for those specially marked packages of Energizer batteries for your shot at winning the Energizer Instant Win Game! Power Up & Read with that bunny that never stops on the Energizer Facebook page, too.
Join me and my kids, Lily and Leo! We’re reading every day and having so much fun challenging ourselves to log those minutes!
Last year’s Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge landed a world record of 304,749,681 minutes logged. Let’s break it this year!
