The new school year is right around the corner. The best part of coming home after a long day of learning is a tasty after school snack. I’m all about tasty snacks but definitely like to throw some healthy in there too so we can keep up the energy needed for homework and evening soccer practice. It never stops, amirite? So while you’re making your back-to-school shopping lists, add a few of these ideas to the grocery list and fuel up your kids for an awesome new school year!
10 After School Snack Ideas
Fruit
This is such an easy one and if your kids are like mine, they love all kinds of fruit. Grab a bunch each week at your local farmers’ market to get it cheap and have enough for lunch and snacks. Here’s a fancy way to serve it if you’re feeling ambitious.
Muffins
Another good one you can pack a lot of healthy stuff into. I like to make mine with Greek yogurt instead of oil to power up the protein and lower the fat content. That’s not to say I don’t throw in a handful of chocolate chips. Balance, people. Here are 3 of my favorite muffin recipes.
Energy Balls
I could eat these energy balls morning, noon, and night. No lie. They’re so good and packed with healthy oats and peanut butter so they really fill you up. Also there are chocolate chips in them. What?
Trail Mix
Kids love trail mix, especially when I let them make it themselves. We hit the bulk aisle in the grocery store and grab some goodies to throw together. I put it in a sealed container and dole it out all week. Yummy snackin’ right here!
Smoothies
Yum! Throw in your kids’ favorite fruits and juices, maybe some yogurt and blend away. There are tons of recipes out there for delicious smoothies. You can probably find a free or cheap Kindle book too!
Fruit Rolls
I make these in the dehydrator and they are so easy without any added sugar or funky ingredients you can’t pronounce. They do take a little time to dry (not to make, it’s so easy but the dehydrator needs time to do its thing) so I’d suggest making a bunch over the weekend and storing them to eat during the week.
Popcorn
Easy peasy. My kids love it and I’ll actually save what they don’t eat in a bag and seal it up to send with them for snack or lunch the next day. My daughter loves popcorn for a morning snack at school!
Hummus and Veggies
Baby carrots and cucumbers are my son’s favorite snacking veggies. I put out a plate of them with a scoop of hummus and he digs right in. And so do I. Mmmm… I love hummus deeply.
Cheese and Crackers
And oldie but goodie. There are some pretty healthy crackers on the market now and this combo usually fills my kids up pretty well. (Plus it’s super easy. We like that!)
Cookies
Okay the kids love cookies and who am I to deny them? A good old fashioned chocolate chip cookie never hurt anyone. Check out some of these delicious cookie recipes to mix it up a bit.
